The Power of Perseverance: Lessons From Cliff Young's Extraordinary Run

Word of the Day: "You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart."– Jeremiah 29:13

Inspiration: “My face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is Heaven, my road is narrow, my way is rough my companions are few, my guide is reliable, my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted, or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity, I won’t give up, shut up, let up, or slow up. – Robert Moorehead

Story: Cliff Young was a 61-year-old Australian potato farmer who had never run a marathon before. In 1983, he entered the inaugural Sydney to Melbourne Ultra Marathon, a grueling 875-kilometer race that typically took six to seven days to complete. As the race began, Cliff stood out from the other runners because he didn't wear traditional running gear. Instead, he wore overalls and gumboots. When asked about his attire, he explained that he had been a farmer all his life and had learned to run after his sheep in these clothes.

At the start of the race, Cliff's slow and shuffling gait caused many to doubt his ability to finish the race, let alone compete with the younger and more experienced runners. But Cliff had something that the others didn't have - an unwavering commitment to his goal. For five days and fifteen hours, Cliff ran without stopping, sleeping only two hours each night. He ran through the day and night, through rain and wind, through pain and exhaustion. And he did it all without stopping. As the race drew to a close, Cliff's determination began to pay off. He passed the younger runners one by one and crossed the finish line in first place, setting a new course record.

Cliff's story is a testament to the power of commitment and perseverance. Despite his age and lack of experience, he refused to give up or make excuses. Instead, he remained focused on his goal and let nothing stand in his way.

This story also relates to Jeremiah 29:13, which states that when we seek God with all our heart, we will find Him. Cliff's singular focus and commitment to his goal is a reminder of the importance of seeking God with the same intensity and determination. Just as Cliff overcame his physical limitations to achieve his goal, we too can overcome our own limitations and obstacles by seeking God with all our heart.
